Our Two Editors Switch Their ’90s Grunge And Sweet Trendy Looks

In this Stylelist column, we’re switching up our style to see what happens when we transform our look into something outside of our comfort zone. Whether we’re preppy, Parisian chic, lady-like or eccentric, true fashion plates are always looking for a challenge.

This week two of our Style editors, Ellie Krupnick and Rebecca Adams, were up for the challenge of swapping styles.

Rebecca describes her style as very ‘90s with a bit of ‘60s flair — very “Yé Yé” girl. She tries to marry the two styles, and the result is always very grungy and comfortable. She says, “My style matches my personality, which is sarcastic and quiet.”

Ellie, on the other hand, likes to try out trends, while keeping her look balanced. She ventures out of her comfort zone to try a trend, but keeps her look rooted in feminine, neutral pieces. There’s always a hint of skin to play up her feminine style, and she names Rachel Bilson as her style icon, saying, “I would kill to invade her closet.”

Ironically, the editors’ wardrobes had some of the same pieces, even though their styles are intrinsically different. Their staples — those go-to pieces that they return to season after season — are completely opposite (think printed, chiffon tops, skinny jeans and sky-high wedges on Ellie, and plaid shirts, loose shorts and Converse for Rebecca).

By the end of the shoot, Rebecca was almost converted. “I feel like heels provide a bit of extra confidence, but honestly, as a tall woman, I just don’t feel the need for the extra height. I do see the leg-lengthening potential, and my posture certainly has improved.”

Ellie’s was more difficult to persuade. “I get the need for comfort and flats, and of course, you can still be pretty in flats. I prefer styles that flatter my body.”

Check out the girls as they switched styles below, and take a look at swaps we’ve done in the past here.

  • Ellie: Look One

“I feel like a different person, it’s almost like I’m wearing armor. It’s a lot of clothing.Between the boots and the jacket, I feel reinforced. The feeling is very free, not constricting, but I don’t feel particularly feminine.”

  • Ellie: Look Two

“I love the shirt, but I’d never pair it with these pants or this vest. For me, the vest is a bit of toughness that I’d wear to tone down something sweet, like a floral dress. This whole look is way more masculine than I’d ever dare to go.”

  • Ellie: Look Three

“I feel like Morticia Addams’ little stepsister. I don’t feel very pretty. There are parts of the look that I love: The shoes would be great with denim shorts and a blousy tank top, and the dress would be great with sky-high wedges. But all together, it’s physically and mentally bringing me down. The fit is also difficult for me: I generally avoid an empire waist because I’m busty.”

  • Ellie: Look Four

“I’d prefer to do either the jean jacket or the Converse; together I feel like a boy from a Nickelodeon commercial. The exposed leg gives it a bit of a girly edge, but overall, the look is just too boxy for me.”

  • Rebecca: Look One

“I feel like I’m playing a character, the popular girl in high school. You can’t have bad posture in this outfit. You have to be really put-together. My grandmother would love this look. I could totally date a finance dude if I dressed like this.”

  • Rebecca: Look Two

“While the silhouette is closer to something I’d actually wear (and I do love leather), I’d never wear these colors. This is more garden party than my natural style. I appreciate the girl that wears this, but she is just not me. And I never wear anything this close to the body.”

  • Rebecca: Look Three

“This look is more tight than I’m comfortable with. I avoid cropped things at all times, and I would never wear all these bracelets. Not because it’s ugly, but it’s just not functional — how could I write wearing these? At the end of the day, comfort trumps all.”

  • Rebecca: Look Four

“I feel very exposed and conscious of my undergarments. I appreciate the lower heel, but if I wore this dress I would definitely throw on an oversized denim or leather jacket. I would take down the sex factor a few notches; I don’t like to draw that kind of attention.”
