Guess Who Used To Be Goth?

With roots in the late ’70s and ’80s punk scene, the goth movement went more mainstream in 1990s. And like most trends (and sub-trends) from the decade, the moody, underground style has managed to prevail. Though not without evolving a bit: What was once jet black hair, powdered faces and severe lipstick has morphed into a much more palatable, even red carpet-friendly version of itself. A berry lip? Brunette hair? Seems anything vaguely dark — makeup, nails, you name it — is considered “goth” these days.

Then we found this gem of a photo: Christina Hendricks in full early ’90s glory. Remember when goths were goths, and not some watered-down, “lite” version? Well, with it being Friday the 13th and all, we decided to take a look back on the beginnings and ultimate mainstreamifying of the goth beauty trend.
